Aboriginal Tobacco Program

This website is hosted by Cancer Care Ontario’s Aboriginal Tobacco Program.

We are part of a movement to create Tobacco-Wise messaging with and for First Nation, Inuit, Métis and other Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners across Ontario. Being a Tobacco-Wise person, family or community means recognizing the difference between traditional and commercial tobacco and being empowered to make the necessary choices to protect not only your own well-being but also that of your friends and loved ones.

Many communities have a sacred relationship with traditional tobacco, and each community has their own unique relationship with it. We recognize that Inuit do not use tobacco in ceremonial practices and that the Métis cultural relationship with traditional tobacco is distinct from that of First Nations. By working directly with First Nations, Inuit and Métis people we help to address commercial tobacco usage in a way that is culturally appropriate and meets the needs of each of our partners.
